Pimsleur

The Pimsleur Approach to learning languages, was developed by Dr Pimsleur who was a language educator for over 40 years. According to their web site, this method is "used by the FBI, CIA and business professionals everywhere". It is claimed to have been used by over 25 million people since 1980

I have personally used this method, and found it to be the easiest of many I have tried. I am currently learning Japanese on my drive to work each day, and found it both fun and engaging right from the beginning. (I have yet to try out my new found skills on a native speaker, but a work colleague that speaks Japanese is just amazed at my progress)

How does it work?

The two key principles are known as Graduated Interval Recall (GIR), and the Principle of Anticipation (PoA)

Basically it means you learn your chosen language in a similar fashion to how children learn - except you will learn in a matter of hours instead of years.

GIR reintroduces information at key intervals during the learning process to effectively maximize retention until no reminders are needed. Before Dr Pimsleur, no-one had really investigated effective ways to build language memory

PoA challenges you to retrieve answers to questions from your own memory. This method simulates direct communication between you and a native speaker, immersing you in a meaningful conversation.

Even with these principles, you still must apply them diligently, setting aside about 30 minutes each day. There are NO written materials, and no learning by rote
